LLILAS Partners in New FLAS Summer Language Program in K’iche’ Maya

Fri, June 1, 2012

LLILAS has partnered with Vanderbilt University, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Chicago to offer an intensive summer language immersion program in K’iche’ Maya, which will be taught in Nahualá, Guatemala, starting Summer 2012.

The course’s innovative design includes in-class instruction as well as intensive one-on-one meetings with native speakers to work on spoken K’iche’.  The language program will offer instruction at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels and is Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) eligible.

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies offers FLAS Fellowships for study of Portuguese or an arranged Amerindian language. These highly competitive fellowships are funded by the Department of Education and are available for both summer and academic year studies.

Four students from the University of Texas at Austin, Brett Anderson, Giovanni Batz, Brandon Baird, and Cristina Metz, were awarded a FLAS to study K’iche’ in the Summer 2012 program.
