Two LLILAS Books Selected as Outstanding Academic Titles of 2012 by "Choice" Magazine

Wed, January 30, 2013

Two titles in the LLILAS book series copublished with the University of Texas Press, Roderic Camp’s Mexican Political Biographies, 1935–2009 and Guillermo Giucci’s The Cultural Life of the Automobile, have been selected as Outstanding Academic Titles of 2012 by Choice magazine, a publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries.

Comprising just over 9 percent of the titles reviewed by Choice during the past year, and less than 3 percent of the more than 25,000 titles submitted during this same period, Outstanding Academic Titles are considered the “best of the best.” In making their selections, the editors apply several criteria to reviewed titles:

  • overall excellence in presentation and scholarship
  • importance relative to other literature in the field
  • distinction as a first treatment of a given subject in book or electronic form
  • originality or uniqueness of treatment
  • value to undergraduate students
  • importance in building undergraduate library collections

Camp, who teaches at Claremont McKenna College, is a respected scholar of Mexican political history. The volume is the fourth edition of his highly regarded biographical directory, which features close to 3,000 entries and serves as a unique resource list of the chronological occupants of all leading national political posts. It also includes a CD that allows readers to search the biographies and appendices.

The Giucci book, published in the LLILAS Translations from Latin America Series, is a highly original work that focuses on the automobile as an instrument of social change and an embodiment of the impact of technology on cultural life. Giucci originally published his book in Spanish and Portuguese, and pursued the idea of an English translation following his tenure at LLILAS as a Tinker Visiting Professor.

These titles can be ordered directly through UT Press. For more information, contact LLILAS Managing Editor Virginia Hagerty
