Study Abroad in Bluefields, Nicaragua: Afro-Caribbean Politics and Culture in Central America

Mon, September 16, 2013

The study abroad program in Bluefields, Nicaragua is accepting applications for the July 13–August 24, 2014 session. Applications to the program, led by Dr. Juliet Hooker and Dr. Edmund Gordon of the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies, are due December 1, 2013.

Both Dr. Hooker, a native of Bluefields, and Dr. Gordon, who has lived and worked in Bluefields, are experts in the culture and politics of the region. The program seeks intellectually ambitious students interested in research with a social justice focus and appeals to students interested in activist scholarship, race, gender, class, sexuality, and identity.
Arlene Mejorado, a 2013 program participant, recalls, “Spending my summer in Bluefields, Nicaragua was one of the best decisions I have made to understand the complexities of Latin America. I was surprised that we got to travel to so many different islands and communities along Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast. This really illustrated the cultural diversity and unique histories of the region. Our class was brought together through engaging and open discussions on critical race theory and feminist perspectives both in and out of the classroom.”
By experiencing the unique culture of Bluefields, a coastal city and the capital of the Southern Atlantic Autonomous Region in Nicaragua, students learn about a related but distinct strand of the Black experience in the Americas. The six-week program culminates in a presentation of original research that considers the processes of race, gender, power, and culture operating within and upon Black communities.
