"Photographing Algeria: Captions and Stereotypes from the Visual Legacy of French Colonialism"

Monday, September 27th from noon to 2 p.m. in the Anthropology Department Seminar Room.

In Algeria, the camera and conquest overlap chronologically to produce visual biometric technologies that mark the French colonial era. Examples in this presentation are tourist postcards of Algeria (Scènes et Types), the ID photo, and anthropometric classification systems.
