In September 2012 the US Department of Education awarded the Department of Middle Eastern Studies fellowship funding for doctoral students under the grant program Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN). The amount of this grant will support the equivalent of three prestigious graduate fellowships per year for three years for students of critical Middle Eastern languages: Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Hebrew.

Priority is given to students who are developing language pedagogy skills in at least two critical Middle Eastern languages. Some awards will prioritize students in their last year or two years of study so that they may focus on dissertation writing and job placement.
As required by the grant, applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need through a previously submitted FAFSA application. The FAFSA will not become available until very early January 2016.
Fellowships will typically be awarded by semester so that the maximum number of students may benefit. Award amounts are based on financial need as calculated by the Office of Student Financial Services. The maximum award is $15,000 per long semester, or $30,000 per year. Tuition coverage for minimum non-resident full-time enrollment (9 credit hours) is provided by the grant in addition to the stipend.
- US citizens and permanent residents
- Minimum 3.50 GPA
- Doctoral or doctoral-track students in Middle Eastern Languages & Cultures. Those currently at the master's level must be continuing to the PhD degree in the MELC program.

- Statement of purpose (2-4 pages) addressing academic/research direction and professional objectives.
- Two recommendation letters from current DMES faculty.
- Evidence of FAFSA submission for the current academic year. For fall 2016 applicants, the FAFSA must be submitted in very early January 2016, shortly after it becomes available online (around Jan. 02, 2016).
- Unofficial transcripts: post-secondary transcripts will be collected from student records and made part of the selection process. Applicants need not take action to submit transcripts themselves.
