Valerie Montes is a graduate student in Middle Eastern Languages & Cultures. She earned her B.A. in Middle Eastern and North African Studies from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

She is an alumna of the Arabic Flagship Program and the Center for Arabic Study Abroad, and most of her time in the Middle East has been spent in Egypt studying Arabic. Additionally, she has studied in Jordan and Tunisia through the Critical Language Scholarship program and worked as a resident director for CLS Arabic in Tangier, Morocco. Valerie has also worked as a language partner for the Arabic Flagship Program at UT and currently works as a TA for intensive second-year Arabic. 

Along with Claire Cooley, Valerie coordinated the 5th annual Jil Jadid "New Generation" Conference, formerly in Arabic Literature and Linguistics, which was expanded to include all Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures in 2015. 

Valerie's MA thesis compares several morphosyntactic features of the Arabic dialects of Tangier, Morocco and Tunis, Tunisia.
