AUSTIN, Texas—Responding to the critical need for advanced Arabic speakers in the United States, The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Middle Eastern Studies has established a National Flagship Language Program in Arabic. The National Security Education Program awarded the university more than $700,000 to establish the program.

Sophomore earns Fellowship to study Yoruba

Tressa Westerman awarded Fulbright-Hays fellowship

Ethnic Studies sophomore Tressa Westerman earned a Fulbright-Hays fellowship to participate in the Intensive Advanced Yoruba Group Project Abroad. Westerman, one of 12 students chosen to participate, will spend eight weeks at Obefemi Owolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, this summer. She will live with a host family, attend Yoruba language and culture classes and visit historical sites around Nigeria. This award is made possible with funds from the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board and the United States Department of Education.
