BNCO's Message

On behalf of my staff and our battalion, I would like to officially welcome you to the Naval ROTC Battalion here at the University of Texas at Austin. I am Midshipman 1st Class Brian Hannum, your Battalion Commanding Officer for the upcoming Fall semester. I look forward to meeting you as you begin your journey to becoming a Navy or Marine Corps officer. Be proud of how far your dedication and hard work have taken you, but understand you still have a difficult road ahead.

The upcoming semester will without a doubt be the most important as you begin your college career. It is during this semester that you will begin to see the high expectations held of you as an aspiring officer. Take your classes seriously and take advantage of the resources here within our battalion. From technical majors like engineering, physics, and computer science to foreign languages, government and economics, we have Midshipmen that are here to support you. In fact, there are a wide variety of upperclassmen that are more than willing to assist you in any facet of life, even outside of academics.

You are joining an elite organization on campus that holds very high standards of its midshipmen. Start preparing yourself now for the challenges that are ahead and do not let any potentially compromising behavior inhibit your success. You are expected to hit the ground running at New Student Orientation in August which will ensure that your college and NROTC career start on the proper footing and lead to a successful career in the military.

I challenge you to start this program operation at 100 percent and there is no doubt in my mind that you will be successful. Your families, friends, advisors, and I are all on your side and we think you have what it takes to be a Navy or Marine Corps officer. Prove us right! Once again, I look forward to meeting you and have a great summer!
