Innovative Approaches to World History and World Geography

Thu, February 25, 2010 • 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM • Region I ESC Satellite, Laredo

“Innovative Approaches to World Studies”
Hemispheres, the international outreach consortium at the University of Texas at Austin, is pleased to present a day-long training session with content, curriculum, and resources for teachers of Contemporary World Cultures, World History, World Geography, and related subjects.

Presentations will include our curriculum unit, “People and Place: Curriculum Resources on Human-Environmental Interactions.”  Inspired by our 2004 Summer Teachers Institute, People and Place is designed to address human adaptation to and modification of the environment. Each case study includes myriad activities that build social studies skills by incorporating primary and secondary sources, presenting information in a variety of formats (including graphs, charts, and maps), including varied points of view, and using mathematical skills to interpret social studies information.

Today’s session will also include “An Introduction to the Middle East,” a content lecture that will help expand your background knowledge of this diverse and important geo-political region beyond what’s in the textbook—or on the evening news.

Attendees will leave with a copy of all of our FREE curriculum units for their own use, including "Explorers, Traders, and Immigrants," "Restoring Women to World Studies," "Understanding Migration: Curriculum Resources for the Classroom," and more!

Hemispheres provides free and low-cost resources to supplement the teaching of world studies in K-12 classrooms. Hemispheres is a consortium of the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, and the South Asia Institute in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin.  For more information, visit our Web site at http://www.utexas.edu/cola/orgs/hemispheres/
