The Center for African and African American Studies at UT has been an enthusiastic participant in several of Hemispheres' teacher workshops and community events. Founded in 1969, the Center for African and African American Studies has been a focal point for campus and community life around the cultural, sociopolitical, economic, and historical experiences of Africans and their descendents. In collaboration with other university departments, centers, and schools, CAAAS offers courses and programming across a broad variety of disciplines focused on black people in Texas, the United States, and the African Diaspora: including Africa, North, South, and Central America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
The Center for East Asian Studies, housed in the Department of Asian Studies, features an interdisciplinary faculty who represent fields including anthropology, political science, literature, language pedagogy, and history, and who specialize in contemporary East Asian cultures, societies, and languages. Scholars at the Center conduct research in the fields of popular culture, religion and ritual, demography, poetry, film, gender issues, politics and government, transnational migration, classical and modern literature, and language pedagogy. The Center is committed to encouraging the inclusion of international components for students at UT, as well as promoting awareness of East Asian cultures and societies throughout the campus and in the community.
The primary mission of the Center for European Studies is the promotion of the study of Europe in the form of: language study; providing courses on European culture, history, economics and politics; and providing opportunities for study abroad. The Center for European Studies has a firm commitment to developing campus resources and courses that will give students the training they need to participate in an international arena in which the European Union plays a key role. By highlighting an interdisciplinary course of study and by offering a degree plan that is not limited by traditional disciplinary boundaries, the Center for European Studies can respond to political and private sector demands for integrated studies that include both academic study and professional training.
The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) has joined Hemispheres as our newest partner on the University of Texas campus. Established in 1990 with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, CIBER promotes international business education on the University campus, in other institutions of higher learning, and in K-12 schools. CIBER's partnership Hemispheres will allow us to expand the content of our newsletter and workshops to include information on the global business environment and specialized components directed at teachers of civics, economics, government, and the social studies.
