Arts & Empowerment in Brazil: Seminar Abroad and Curriculum Development Project
June 29–July 28, 2010 (dates subject to change)
Application deadline: March 1, 2010
The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies and Texas Performing Arts will present a unique opportunity to 14 middle and high school teachers of fine arts, language arts, and social studies to learn about the role of the performing arts in educational and social projects in Brazil. Key to these projects is their commitment to a high standard that does not compromise the quality of the art or the artists involved in the teaching: they extend both first-class instruction and a variety of social services to the most marginalized communities, offering young people better alternatives for their lives. With a broad understanding of these innovative programs, participants will create curriculum units that explore Brazil’s history, culture, and language.
Cities to be visited include Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, Brazil.
The project is contingent on funding by the U.S. Department of Education through the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program. Participant fees are anticipated to be $1,250 and will cover: round-trip airfare from Dallas to Brazil and all transportation in Brazil; classes in Brazil; accommodation and 1–2 meals per day for the duration of the program; field trips and entry fees to visited sites.
