| Innovative Approaches to World History and World Geography | October 9, 2008 | Region XI ESC, Fort Worth | Hemispheres, the international outreach consortium at the University of Texas at Austin, is pleased to present a day-long training session with content, curriculum, and resources for teachers of Contemporary World Cultures, World History, World Geography, and related subjects. Our newest curriculum unit, "Explorers, Traders, and Immigrants: Tracking the Cultural and Social Impacts of the Global Commodity Trade" examines eight global commodities from their points of origin and the social, cultural, political, and economic changes they wrought along their way. Each case study covers the initial discovery of and/or access to a commodity, its progress from local good to international trade, the ramifications of large-scale production, and the drama of its boom-and-bust cycles through the years. Attendees will leave with a copy of all of our FREE curriculum units for their own use, including "Explorers, Traders, and Immigrants," "People and Place: Curriculum Resources on Human-Environmental Interactions," "Understanding Migration: Curriculum Resources for the Classroom," and more! Hemispheres provides free and low-cost resources to supplement the teaching of world studies in K-12 classrooms. Hemispheres is a consortium of the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, and the South Asia Institute in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin.
