AMD (Advanced Micro Devices)
Spring 2008 Site Review
I am interning at Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) as Program Management Co-op in the Server Division. AMD is the second largest computer CPU maker in the world after Intel. It is in a very unique market as there is only one other competitor. In Austin AMD is known as a responsible corporate figure that is very involved in the community.
I was hired pretty much as a consultant to create an automation tool for my group which would improve their current process. The process which I will be improving is the CPU Sample Management Process. This is the process of Program Management planning and delivering CPU samples to their customers. I started the internship researching the current state of the process and for the first month or so all I did was watch others in my group do their job. I began to document the process in flow charts and eventually finished documentation of the current state. I then had to analyze the flow charts to find shortfalls and "improvement areas" in the process so that I could make an automation tool to fix that problem. I ended up summarizing that a database would be a perfect automation tool to enhance the process and make it much more efficient. I presented my findings to management and they loved it.
They approved my idea and I have since been developing the database that I had proposed. Everyday I pretty much work on my database design and development. I have a deadline of August 2008 to finish my database by. Other than database development I also have other responsibilities. These include helping PM Coordinators support our OEM PM's (Customer Representatives) and also helping with handling and delivering samples to our customers. I have found that AMD is a great place for an internship and the environment is very friendly and inviting. I would recommend AMD to anyone looking for a high impact internship.
