American Red Cross
Spring 2011 Site ReviewPosition: Youth Services Intern
Student: History Senior
This semester I have been working as the Youth Services Intern at the American Red Cross of Central Texas Chapter. I wanted this internship because I thought it would be very rewarding to work with an organization that is so helpful and influential in people’s lives. Also, I have considered going into the non-profit industry as a career and I have really wanted to get to see what it is like to work within this industry, especially with such a large, well-known organization.
When I started this internship, I was unsure what to expect. I began by performing simple tasks like drafting emails, filing volunteer folders, and managing the Youth Facebook Page. After a couple weeks I was given more responsibilities. I planned the Youth Council meetings and began entering volunteer information into our database. I also would help the marketing coordinator sometimes since he works in the volunteer services department so I got to see this aspect of the non-profit industry. After I had been working there longer, I helped put together materials for people to bring to volunteer events to give out to people and I began entering information into other spreadsheets that are sent off to the National American Red Cross. I also began making reports through our database to make it easier to find certain information within the database. Over time, I was given more responsibility as I gained my advisor’s trust. I also worked with volunteers on projects, which was exciting to get to know some of them.??Overall, this internship was a very rewarding experience and I encourage anybody interested to apply. You not only get great experience working in a business, specifically a non-profit, but you also are contributing to helping disaster victims when they need it most.
