Student: Government & Philosophy Senior
Position: Computing & Tablet Specialist
My internship was a Computing and Tablet Specialist position with Best Buy. At the start of my internship, I was told it was a unique position that is typically not the kind of role typically admitted to the course because of it’s sales/retail nature. However, this role was a brand new pilot position with the company with a more centralized selling structure, different pay scale, increased leadership responsibilities, and coaching and training responsibilities. Best Buy also sent me to a company-wide tablet training in Houston to gain a broader understanding of the emerging industry.
In this position, I was responsible for coaching and training my fellow sales associates on the new industry of tablets - from specialized product knowledge, to notional margin awareness, selling strategies, and more. I was responsible for pulling the weekly e-learning report for my fellow employees and instructing them on which ones they needed to complete, coaching the department on monthly notional margin product values, where the department stood in terms of our notional margin percentage to target goal, specialized product knowledge, new sales strategies, scheduling, and more. My primary responsibilities included developing a client base in the new tablet market, an emerging tech market that few retail stores have tapped into. Being the only full-time tablet specialist, I am the primary employee at my store responsible for improving overall sales for our store in addition to building our Best Buy for Business Channel through tablets. Because I was already employed with the company, this position was a paid role and I worked anywhere from 32 to 40 hours a week.
