CASA of Travis County, Inc.

Fall 2009 Site Review

Position: Events & Communications Intern
Student: Psychology Senior

I am interning with CASA of Travis County as an Event/Development Intern. In my internship I work directly with the Events and Development Manager, Callie Langford.  I work in an office in North Austin. The office is located in North Austin. The office space has about 20 offices, however, most people work in the court so, the office usually only has 4-7 people. In my position I was able to meet a lot of Austin business people owners and a lot of CASA donors. I worked on a medley of projects such as editing a newsletter, contacting businesses for bids, collecting donations, and sat in committee meetings.

A day in the life of a CASA Event and Development intern is constantly changing and never boring. There are sometimes outside projects but mostly, interns work only in the office and during events. My typical office day I go in get coffee for myself and water, because I will usually need it. An office day consist marketing a lot of business cold calls, and returning a few sponsor calls. On other days I might be calling businesses and asking for bids on different type of work we need done. Later on in the day we prepare for lunch meetings. For lunch, we typically we travel out once or twice a week for lunch committee meetings. The lunches are with different committees and business partners. Typically the object of the meetings to talk, motivate and guide all the members to do their job. There are a few meetings that are strictly to review what we already know and to make sure everyone is on the same page. Those meetings might seem useless, but without you have a lot of strangers working on a project instead of a team of resources. After the business lunch, we go back to the office, write a meeting summary and prepare for other upcoming events. Before the day is over we usually do a little necessary busy work. Such as organize the office, send correspondence finalize some projects. Working at the CASA is a very rewarding experience.
