City of Pflugerville, Planning Department

Spring 2011 Site Review

Position: Planning Intern
Student: Geography Senior

My internship has been in the Planning Department at the City of Pflugerville and I am interning there as a Planner Intern. My duties have involved aspects of zoning creation, code enforcement, and annexations to the city limits. My responsibilities have included the creation of planning maps for annexations, zoning changes, and monthly developmental maps that reflect plat and subdivision additions. I have worked extensively with the Senior Planner Jeremy Frazzell and assisted him in his duties. I spent two hours each day helping Jeremy and learning the complexities of being a city planner. I have created paper and PDF maps for use by the Planning Department and the City Council and do these tasks on a weekly basis. Sometimes my internship duties are filled with the mapping and some days I work on development agreements that are required for new subdivisions.

I have enjoyed the challenges involved in my internship duties and know that without the internship classes I have taken I would not be as well prepared for a career as a Geographer. Employers are looking for well educated people; however, they are also looking for the people they hire to have practical work experience. Thanks to the availability of internships I have experience to put in my resume that not only reflects a good education, but also includes real time experience. I am now a full time employee at the City of Pflugerville with a good salary and great benefits. If not for the opportunities that internships have given me I would not be where I am today and that is an undeniable fact. I highly recommend internships for anyone who is starting a career in Geography. I have found internship to be the best way to gain the practical experience necessary to begin a new career.
