I&O Communications

Spring 2011 Site Review

Position: Public Affairs Intern
Student: English Senior

I&O Communications is an Austin-based communications firm specializing in public relations, public affairs, marketing, digital optimization, and social media. Day to day internship duties include media monitoring, media list management, research, and campaign support. Interns are also expected to perform entry-level administrative tasks, such as running the front desk, managing phone calls, and running errands. Interns are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week, and scheduling is flexible around class schedules. Internships with I&O Communications are paid and the firm works with interns to provide college credit.

A typical day for an intern at I&O Communications begins with reviewing and summarizing news clips then sending these digests to clients. The rest of the workday is relatively unstructured, and is subject to the changing needs of clients. Interns are expected to do anything from performing background research, writing press releases, obtaining editorial calendars, managing email lists, and developing web copy.

This internship provides students with the opportunity to work with a team of innovative professionals for a range of clients such as Car2Go, ASPCA, and UTeach. Students can expect to learn the basics of public relations, as well as get real-time experience in crisis communications, social media, and digital optimization. Interns must be professional, detail oriented, and able to juggle multiple responsibilities. This can be a fast-paced internship, so applicants must be able to work under pressure with deadlines in mind. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite is required, and knowledge of Vocus and social media is a plus.
