Spring 2011 Site Review

Position: Marketing Intern
Student: Psychology Junior

Illuminas is a wonderful place to work.  Not only did I have a great time, I also learned more than I could have ever imagined that I would.  I learned about the inner workings of a business and expanded my knowledge on the “real-life” uses of statistics and data analysis. I feel that this internship has gotten me closer to accomplishing my career goals.

One of the greatest things about Illuminas was the work environment.  Upon arriving at 10 AM, it was not uncommon to hear laughing and making conversation as they left their morning meeting.  The dress is casual; when I first started working there, my supervisor talked about how we couldn’t have casual Friday, because if the dress code got anymore casual, people would come to work in their swimsuit.

Another great thing about being an Intern at Illuminas is the variety of tasks that you can be given.  On a typical day, you may work on anywhere from one to five projects, completing a task in each.  You may be cleaning transcripts from focus groups, entering data into a PowerPoint, or (my personal favorite) trying to “break” a survey.  To “break” a survey, you must go through the survey and select the most ridiculous answers.  For instance you may want to say that you are 21, and have 30 years experience in the technology field.

I feel that working at Illuminas has helped me understand what it would be like to work in an office.  As someone who is not quite sure what they would like to do after college, working here has been a very educating experience. Being a part of multi-million dollar projects and hearing people’s opinions from around the world, made working here not really seem like work at all.
