Morgan Stanley Smith Barney
Summer 2009 Site Review
The Riebe-Pumo Group at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney is a Wealth Management group that specializes in asset allocation and retirement planning. The financial advisor team consists of two Financial Planning Specialists – Stephen Riebe and Michael Pumo, a Registered Associate – Rene Newman, and an Intern. For the past ten weeks, as the summer intern, my duties included but were not limited to: answering phones, printing and preparing letters for mail out, making copies of administrative documents, entering client data into a computer database, assisting in researching investments using sources such as Morningstar, helping prepare spreadsheets for investment analysis, and maintaining clients’ files.
The first week of interning consisted mainly of training and becoming familiar with the computer and telephone systems. For the remainder of the internship, a typical day with the Riebe-Pumo group began by visiting the Registered Associate at his desk and receiving a folder and list of tasks to be completed throughout the day. Assignments also included projects that sometimes took more than a week to complete. On a normal day, after receiving my work, I would proceed to my desk to check my e-mail, turn in material for scanning, and check the mail. Throughout the rest of the day, I would relieve the Registered Associate of his phone duties during his lunch break and complete the rest of the necessary tasks at my workstation.
Over all, I kept busy throughout the entire internship. My projects included a marketing campaign for potential clients, creating a time line for on-boarding new clients, and organizing the filing system. I was also able to create asset allocation and retirement plan proposals on many occasions. During my down time, the internship site’s open environment allowed me to speak to numerous people around the office to gain knowledge about the industry in general.
