Spring 2010 Site ReviewPosition: Sales & Marketing Intern
Student: Psychology Senior
Rare magazine is an Austin lifestyle publication and part of Rare Media. The magazine throws many events throughout Austin and covers all things Music, Architecture, Food, Fashion and more. Interning here has been an interesting experience and definitely provided me with new opportunities and lessons for the working world reality after graduation.
As a sales and marketing intern with a slight helping hand in editorial my day could consist of many different things. I was certainly a hands on intern and by no means fetching coffee for my supervisors. Usually there would be a sales related task, whether it was calling new Austin businesses for their advertising and contact info, or marketing flyers, posters, and social media for upcoming events and issue releases. I often worked on Facebook and Twitter to get word out about what Rare was up to and what people should be looking for next. I also had the opportunity to work with my fellow interns on a welcome package from Rare to new businesses and come up with a plan for products and items that should be included etc. On the events side I was often part of pre planning events as well as coordinating things during the event, whether working at tables to sign people up for the Rare Weekend Pass, or mingling with the crowd to network I was always an active participant on the event side of Rare media. I was even given the opportunity to work on blog postings for web content for the website. I did both exit polls from local concert goers as well as fashion blogs to keep in touch with our readers more often than just a monthly issue. I had a great time working at Rare and the staff was great as well, guiding me along the way.
