Brookdale Senior Living
Fall 2012 Site Review
Position: Life Enrichment Coordinating Intern
Student: American Studies Junior
Horizon Bay is an assisted living community in Northwest Austin. It is not a nursing home. The seniors who live here need minimal help and do not require extensive medical care. The community has around 64 residents who occupy apartments within the main building.
Every morning at 9 am management meets to review their daily agendas. I was allowed to join these meetings. The following employees attend-memory care supervisor, nurse, executive director, activities director, head cook, marketing manager, handyman, office manager, and physical therapy supervisor. The meeting typically lasts about 30 minutes. Once a month, management is joined by outside contractors who provide supplemental care to the community.
My main function was to assist the activities director with the planning, preparation, and facilitation of events, activities, and outings. This is what a typical day might look like-
10:00 weekly shopping trip to HEB- assist seniors onto bus
10:30 Wii Bowling- active game in front of television
1:00 Arts and Crafts - create unique picture frame
1:30 Movement is Medicine- Bean Bag Toss
3:30 Cranium Crunchers- puzzles and trivia
6:00 Horizon Bay Strollers- walk around the building
Decorating for monthly theme dinners and arranging for musical talent were part of my responsibility along with minimal computer and clerical duties.
Additionally, there were many opportunities for individual conversations with the residents through interviews and surveys. These interviews were designed to engage seniors in reminiscing and the surveys provided their activity preferences which served as a valuable tool when planning future events.
A student who is compassionate, attentive to detail, friendly, professional, and comfortable around seniors would enjoy interning at Horizon Bay.
