Spring 2012 Site Review

Explore Austin is a non-profit mentorship program that partners low-income students at KIPP elementary with leaders in the Austin area. These mentors commit to six Saturday activities and a weeklong summer backpacking trip in Colorado. The office of Explore Austin is located in East Austin in a great, naturally lit, house. The house creates a familial environment, encouraging everyone to work together. The staff positions at Explore Austin are the Executive Director, two program directors, one female, one male, Marketing and Communications Director, a Development Director and an Accountant. Explore Austin is a very tight knit office, in which the office community and their ethics are held to a high standard. The office is also very relaxed and highly encourages fun to be a main component of work life. This is balanced well with goal setting and attention and dedication to these goals during the workday. My favorite part about working at Explore Austin has been the “field trips.” These are once a month activities planned by a different staff person, in which the office takes an afternoon or morning off and goes on a bonding activity. These range from a movie, putt-putt, etc. It is also a tradition in the Explore Austin office that the organization pays for everyone’s lunch out when a staff person has a birthday. A typical day at Explore Austin for me is reporting to my boss, the Marketing and Communications Director, updating her on my progress. I usually write a blog on Thursdays and on Tuesdays I complete whatever random tasks are pending.
