Madison Square Garden

Summer 2012 Site Review

Position: NY Rangers Marketing Intern
Student: Sociology Junior

My internship is with the Madison Square Garden Company doing marketing for the New York Rangers. The Madison Square Garden offices are located at 2 Penn Plaza in New York City and I am required to be here from 9am to 5pm every day, unless I am working a certain event or party elsewhere. My role as a student associate (they call it that instead of “intern”) at this company is to facilitate and execute projects between different groups and people within the office. I have many daily responsibilities in the office, ranging from daily administrative tasks to thinking up new ideas for the marketing department. These responsibilities include answering phones in an efficient and professional manner, attending meetings and sharing my ideas, organizing and keeping track of invoices, coming up with new and creative ideas for the NYR Marketing department, interacting with different departments throughout the office in a professional manner, and many more. I also have a weekly project due at the end of every week that allows me to demonstrate my marketing skills to my bosses. Most of these projects involve me coming up with new ideas for the Marketing department. For example, my first project was to come up with 10 new products that can be used for promotional merchandise (cheap products that help promote the brand such as pens, t-shirts, hats, etc.), and my next project was to come up with new ideas for gifts to give to season subscribers.

Every Friday I have a meeting with two of my supervisors and share my project and ideas while they give me their feedback. This has really helped me to understand how Marketing works and what are good and not so good ideas. They have even used some of my ideas when ordering new products, which makes me feel very proud. One of my other responsibilities with this job is to help out with off-site events. There were three that I helped out with this summer, and it really gave me good hands on experience. One of the events I worked on was a boat cruise for the NY Rangers and clients, and the other two were golf outings that Madison Square Garden along with the NY Rangers put on for clients. I really enjoy this internship and it has taught me a lot about the Marketing business as well as overall professional business skills.
