Ronald McDonald House Charities
Spring 2012 Site Review
Position: Communications Intern
Student: Economics Senior
As a Communication and Special Events intern for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas, I have a wide range of responsibilities. RMHC Austin staff takes care to help interns learn and explore their interests. In general when I report in everyday I receive assignments from the Communications Manager and then receive assignments from the Events Coordinator. A lot of my assignments are connecting the two departments. Updating web content is a skill acquired by every single intern no matter what department. We learn the proper voice used to represent the RMHC brand and how to use that voice in the different representations: website, blog, press releases, social media outlets, etc.
For communications, there is really the opportunity to focus where you wish. There is freedom to make suggestions for changes to the website and the social media outlets. I really enjoy interpreting the analytics for each of these sites. Each month I write an analysis of these sites and make suggestions on what would be more effective for the future. This involves analytics provided by Google for the multiple websites, Facebook analytics, Wordpress dashboard, Hootsuite analytics, and PinView. I do a lot of website content management especially in terms of making the site more user friendly. There is also time spent periodically formatting emails that will be sent to subscribers concerning latest news.
For special events, there are no expectations for what I will do each day specifically. Every day circles back to specific events depending on what season it is. However coming in, there is a wide range of specific things I could be doing including working on things for donors, communicating with people over logistics, updating website content, etc. This provides a wide range of opportunities to learn and always keeps things fun and interesting.
