Spring 2013 Site Review

Position: Accounting/Finance Intern
Student: Economics Senior

I am an Accounting/Finance Intern at Wally Tingley & Associates, and I basically function as the CFO’s assistant. Wally Tingley & Associates is a small real estate closing firm in Austin, but the Accounting/Finance Intern deals more with the company’s financials rather than the actual closings.

As I get into work each day at 12 pm, the first thing I always do is check my email. I may get an important notice from my supervisor, an invoice to be printed, or a reminder to update our accounting software QuickBooks. After that, I open mail and file various invoices and receipts. Checking email, opening mail, and filing usually takes up the first 20 minutes. Then I work from a weekly to-do list, which my supervisor updates as he adds more projects for me to work on, and I update as I finish each task. Many tasks include creating payroll and accounts payable checks, processing payroll taxes and liabilities, perform bank reconciliations, and generating end of the month financial statements in QuickBooks. Most of my work is individual, and I work using an operations manual, which provides instructions on how to perform many of my daily tasks. I am constantly updating this operations manual as well, making the instructions clearer so that the next intern can understand it better. I may also work on a larger research based project apart from my usual tasks that my supervisor assigns me to.

This internship has been an invaluable experience for me! I’ve learned so much about accounting, finance, and working as a business professional.

Spring 2012 Site Review

My internship at Wally Tingley & Associates has been the most rewarding experience during my college career. Wally Tingley & Associates is a real estate closing business comprised of fee attorneys. They have been serving Austin, TX since 1990. The staff is very friendly and all work with each other to get the job done in a quick efficient manner. I am the accounting intern 12-15 hrs a week MWF. Once at work I go through all the mail and process it for account payables and/or file it away. After processing mail, I process the account payables for a period and create all the checks in QuickBooks. We have three pay periods a month (4th, 14th, 24th) in which we pay bills and make payments. My supervisor, Terry Tingley, makes a “To Do” schedule every week for the things that need to get done. I go through the schedule from priority to pending items and once I complete them I write down completed next to the item letting me know that it has already been finished for the week.  I process payroll twice a month and create liability checks as well as TASC checks. Depending on the time of year I have to work on quarterly reports, W-2’s, 1099’s, etc. and mail them in by a certain time. I also review cash flow charts and financial spreadsheets.  Those are all the main things I do but other things filing, copying, mailing, posting, etc.

My internship has been very influential and a positive experience for me. I have learned more than I ever thought I would have and I feel proud to say that I interned at Wally Tingley & Associates. I have learned many things that I will take with me in my future career.
