Workers Defense Project/Proyecto Defensa Laboral (WDP) is a membership-based organization that empowers low-income workers to ensure fair employment through education, direct services, community organizing, and strategic partnerships.
Internship Period: June 17, 2013 to August 09, 2013
The Intern will work with WDP staff and volunteers to organize community events, fundraise, coordinate education programming, and build WDP membership. The intern will learn important skills in community organizing, fundraising, non-profit administration, and volunteer coordination.
→ 3.0 GPA
→ Strong written and verbal communication skills
→ Fluent in Spanish
→ Computer literate: Word, Internet, and e-mail
→ Ability to work independently
→ Commitment to social justice
→ Able to work 30 to 40 hours a week including some nights and weekends.
Responsibilities: Intern will work with WDP staff and volunteers to:
→ Assist in planning and carrying out organizational events
→ Assist with recruitment at weekly member meetings
→ Secure donations for the organization from local businesses
→ Support coordination of and recruitment for WDP’s educational classes (ESL, computer classes, etc)
→ Inform Latina/o immigrant workers of their rights at regular outreach events and speaking opportunities
→ Help coordinate immigrant worker committee to do event planning and outreach for WDP
→ General Office Admin support, answering phones, data entry, writing e-mail alerts, mailings, making phone calls, etc.
→ Life-long experience and skills
→ Weekly stipend of $100 a week
→ Referrals for future employment
→ Possible class credit
