Breakthrough is a long-term academic program that provides a path from middle school through college for students who will be first-generation college graduates. At the core of Breakthrough’s model are the rigorous summer programs that students in middle school and high school attend at the University of Texas and Manor ISD. In the summer of 2012, for the fourth year, rising 10th grade Breakthrough students will participate in a 2-week summer program called the 10th Grade Leadership Institute. This program will focus on school success and college and career exploration through the development of leadership and communication skills for our 57 rising 10th graders. Each day will include learning activities devised with the following outcomes in mind:

• Students will have increased confidence and skillfulness as communicators
• Students will have a greater self-awareness of their strengths and areas for development
• Students will have a greater sense of responsibility and self-management
• Students will have a greater knowledge of how to build strong relationships to be successful and how to work as a team

Breakthrough Austin seeks enthusiastic, creative, and successful college students to teach and mentor 10th graders during our summer program. With the guidance and support of professional educators, Breakthrough teaching interns will be responsible for teaching small groups of students as well as helping facilitate large-group activities.

• Serve as a leader and mentor to the 10th grade students
