Workers Defense Project, Research and Policy Intern, Application Deadline, BTT Gateway Job ID 8280

The Research and Policy intern will work with the Research and Policy program of WDP to protect the rights of low-wage workers, particularly construction workers, through implementing policy that creates opportunity for working families and ensures fairer conditions at the workplace. The advocate will also participate in grassroots organizing work, and the coordination of a committee of low-wage workers that fight for the change of both local law and statewide policy. WDP’s successful model of policy change has won thousands of workers in Texas safer conditions and better wages. 

Intern will work with WDP staff and volunteers to: 
→ Develop and implement a grassroots mobilization plan to push both industry leaders and policymakers to create better, safer jobs for working families 
→ Coordinate with local media to spread the word about workplace injury and other common abuse of low-wage workers 
→ Help coordinate immigrant worker committees to build worker leadership statewide 
→ Research policy solutions for working families and work with Texas Legislature 
→ Organize public pressure campaigns to improve working conditions for low-wage workers 
→ Plan and participate in statewide actions, marches, and press conferences 
→ General office and programmatic support 


Requirements: 
→ Strong written and verbal communication skills 
→ Conversant in Spanish 
→ Computer literate: Word, Internet, and e-mail 
→ Ability to work independently 
→ Commitment to social justice 
→ Able to work 30 to 40 hours a week including some nights and weekends. Must be available Tuesday evenings.
