Writers in the Schools, Summer Performance Poetry Internship, Application Deadline, BTT Gateway Job ID 8290

Writers in the Schools (WITS) is recruiting an Assistant Coach for its Meta-Four Houston youth performance poetry team. This full-time internship will provide one intern with the opportunity to coach and mentor youth performance poets who are members of the 2014 Meta-Four Houston team. This internship is (paid, full-time) and will begin June 9, 2014 and end August 1, 2014. 

The Meta-Four Assistant Coach will: 
-Lead writing and performance workshops for the Meta-Four Houston slam team 
-Coordinate Meta-Four practice schedule with head coaches and students 
-Attend and assist at all Meta-Four practices and performances 
-Assist Meta-Four head coaches with workshops 
-Mentor team members one-on-one with feedback on writing and performance styles 
-Lead small-group writing and performance workshops for teammates who are crafting 
group performances 
-Work with team members to provide necessary documentation and information for lengthy Brave New Voices application process 
-Coordinate travel arrangements and registrations for Meta-Four team at Brave New Voices 
-Photograph and video team practices, individual and group performances, and events 
for WITS archival purposes 
-Secure and create contracts with professional photographers/videographers for 
performances as needed 
-Capture successful writing and performance lessons; lessons will be grouped in an 
informal curriculum document for future training and resource guides for WITS/Meta-Four teachers 
-Coordinate fundraising events with our development staff to help send the team to the Brave New Voices competition in Philadelphia 
-Serve as chaperone for the Texas Youth Poetry Slam and Brave New Voices; the intern will travel with the team (contingent on available travel funds and stipends) 
-Create a marketing package that will include photographs, video, flyers, and program descriptions; WITS and Meta-Four will use this package to highlight the program’s success to educators and funders with the goal 

Qualifications: 
The Performance Poetry Internship is open to all interested candidates who are currently undergraduate students enrolled in a college or university full-time and who will be returning to school full-time in Fall 2014 as undergraduate sophomores, juniors, or seniors. 

Candidates must demonstrate an aptitude in performance poetry, youth mentoring, education, arts education, creative writing, event planning, professional social media marketing, and/or non-profit administration. Skills or experience with web design or photography/videography a plus.
