Judith Coffin, Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter by Simone de Beauvoir; August 28.

Simone de Beauvoir, celebrated French intellectual, unconventional woman, and author of The Second Sex recounts her very conventional childhood and her rebellion against it. Parents and children, readers and writers, friendship and love: these are the central dramas. Readers in the 1950s loved this first volume of Beauvoir's memoirs. So have readers since.

Judy Coffin is an Associate Professor of History, director of the History Honors program, and professor in the Normandy Scholars program. She teaches European history. She writes about the history of France, memoirs and autobiography, and private life. Her most recent article is about ordinary readers' letters to Simone de Beauvoir in the 1950s, in The American Historical Review in October, 2010.
