Special Event: Stanley F. Lombardo :: "The Fall of Troy" from Book II of Virgil's Aeneid
Tue, October 9, 2012 | SAC Auditorium Student Activity Center, 2.104
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
As he has for the past several years, University of Kansas Classics professor Dr. Stanley Lombardo will be coming to Austin. This year, he'll be reading, "The Fall of Troy" from Book II of Virgil's Aeneid.
Stanley F. Lombardo (born 1943) is an American professor of Classics at the University of Kansas. He is best known for his translations of the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Aeneid.
He has been giving dramatic readings of his translations on campuses throughout the country, as well as at such venues as the Smithsonian Institution, the Chicago Poetry Center, on National Public Radio and national television.
The style of his translations is a more vernacular one, emphasizing conversational English rather than the formal tone of some older American English translations of classical verse.
Lombardo designs his translations to be performed orally, as they were in ancient Greece. He also performs the poems, and has recorded them as audio books.
A native of New Orleans, he has a B.A. from Loyola University in New Orleans, an M.A. from Tulane University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas (1976).
In 1976 he joined the faculty at the University of Kansas, where he served as department chair for fifteen years and teaches Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as general courses on Greek literature and culture.
