Elva Treviño Hart was born in south Texas to Mexican immigrants. She has a bachelor's degree in theoretical mathematics and a master's degree in computer science/engineering from Stanford University. After working as a computer professional for twenty years, she now lives in Virginia. She is the author of the 2000 American Book Award winning bestseller Barefoot Heart.

Her award-winning memoir, Barefoot Hart, has been widely praised for its affecting but unsentimental portrayal of childhood in a migrant family.  Her latest book, Simpáticas:  San Miguel Stories, is a collection of short fiction that observes the lives of wealthy American tourists through the eyes of their Mexican maids.
