Air Force Major Dies in Training Crash near Guam
Memorial fund honors psychology alumnus
AUSTIN, Texas -July 28, 2008- United States Air Force Maj. Christopher Cooper (B.A. '97, Psychology) died June 21 in an Air Force training crash. Cooper, 33, was serving as the commander of a six-man Raider 21 aircrew aboard a B-52 bomber when it crashed into the Pacific Ocean 30 miles northwest of Guam.
The B-52 Stratofortress was deployed to Guam from Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. It was scheduled to make a flyover during Guam's 64th Liberation Day Parade when it crashed. The Air Force confirmed there were no survivors.
Cooper served two tours in Iraq and served in special operations in Afghanistan. He earned a bronze star for his work as an Air Force liaison officer with the army in Iraq.
The University of Texas at Austin Air Force ROTC program commissioned Cooper as a second lieutenant in 1997.
More than 1,800 guests including family members, airmen, sailors, soldiers and friends honored the aircrew at a memorial ceremony at Anderson Air Force Base July 25 in Guam.
