College Hosts 13th Annual Colloquium Hippocraticum

The Departments of Classics and Philosophy in the College of Liberal Arts will host the 13th Annual "Colloquium Hippocraticum" August 11-13 at The University of Texas at Austin. The conference will bring together scholars and students of ancient medicine, science, philosophy, history and literature with the aim of advancing understanding and usage of the term "Hippocratic."
Jacques Jouanna, professor emeritus of the University of Paris-Sorbonne, will deliver the keynote address "On Regimen in the Hippocratic Corpus: The concept of diaita and the big puzzles," at 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 11. Heinrich von Staden, one of the world's foremost authorities on ancient medicine and professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, will deliver the keynote address, "The Oath and the oaths: Is the Hippocratic Oath Hippocratic?" at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 12.
This triennial, international scholarly conference began in 1972 and has never before been held in the United States. It is funded by a $25,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. Additional sponsors include the Vice Provost for Health at the university, the Seton Group of Hospitals, Society for Ancient Medicine and Texas Medical Association.
