In the 1950s the British faced a revolution in Arab nationalism that seemed as momentous at the time as the Arab spring does today.  John Voll will survey the past half-century to assess currents of Islam and Arab nationalism.  Voll is Professor of Islamic History at Georgetown University and a Past President of the Middle East Studies Association.
