Martin Dies, Jr. Study Abroad Scholarship Announced
Three LAHers: Seve Kale (Chile), Charles Nwaogu (Egypt), and Michelle Lawrence (Italy) receive funds to travel abroad.

This scholarship honors Martin Dies Jr. Mr. Dies, a graduate of Columbia University and the Southern Methodist University School of Law, served his country in World War II, being awarded two Presidential Citations for bravery. An outstanding trial lawyer, Mr. Dies was elected to the Texas State Senate in 1958, serving until 1965. He served as Secretary of State of Texas from 1968 until 1971. Among his many accomplishments as a public servant, he improved the Texas Park System. In recognition of his efforts, Dam B State Park was renamed "Martin Dies Jr State Park." In 1971, Mr. Dies was named Chief Justice of the Ninth Court of Appeals, serving 19 years in that position. Mr. Dies retired in 1989 and died on May 14, 2001.
