The Summer 2008 Plan II in Rome Students

The Plan II Honors Program is pleased to announce the continuation of the new UT Affiliated Study Program at the American Institute for Roman Culture (AIRC) in Rome, Italy in the summer of 2009. The program is restricted to Plan II students. The 15 selected participants will study in Rome for

The program will be taught jointly by UT faculty leader Karl Galinsky, Cailloux Centennial Professor of Classics and University Distinguished Teaching Professor, and professor at the AIRC. Student participants will engage in an up-close look at the ancient history and culture of the Roman Empire, as well as the modern re-discovery of this fascinating city and the issues surrounding its preservation. Student participants will receive transfer credit for a Plan II Junior Seminar (TC 357) and an upper-division Humanities

Students will participate in both class lectures and lots of on-site visits to places like the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the ancient port city of Ostia, the Christian Catacombs, and a modern dig site. The courses are taught in English, and there are NO Italian language or history prerequisites for this program. Plan II students of all areas of interest are encouraged to apply.

Participants will room together in modest apartments in a local Italian neighborhood located near Rome’s historic center. Students are encouraged to explore the city on their own whenever possible and to visit other cities or countries before/after the program and on weekends. One of the goals of this program is to give students the opportunity to enjoy an authentic Italian experience regardless of prior knowledge of the language or history.

Costs:

The estimated total cost for the entire program including courses, textbooks, lodging, local transportation, cultural outings (museums, site visits), cell phone rental, medical insurance, meals, air fare, and fees is approximately $8,200. All students are strongly encouraged to apply for multiple scholarships to finance their participation in the program including, but not limited to, the Plan II Travel Grant and the International Education Fee Scholarship. Students interested in participating in the Plan II Summer Program in Rome should attend the info session on November 12, 2008 at 3:00pm in WCH 4.118. They will also need to submit an application to the Plan II Office by Friday, December 5, 2008. The American Institute for Roman Culture (AIRC) is an independent American non-profit organization with offices in Texas and Rome. Founded in 2002 to promote and defend the cultural heritage of Rome, the institute carries out cultural heritage projects and organizes a variety of education programs, exhibits, publications and other scholarly activities.
