Plan II Honors Internship Program at the Blanton Museum of Art

Plan II offers an internship progam at the Blanton Museum of Art that is designed to provide undergraduates with experience in the nature and operations of a major art museum.   The experience gained by interns will benefit them in their own research projects, in possible graduate studies, and even as a career option in such fields as librarianship, museum studies, archival or curatorial work, as well as public affairs, marketing, public programming and event management.

The internship will be for the whole academic year September to May, or in exceptional cases for one semester only.  The position is not a benefits-eligible one, but there is a stipend of $1500 per semester sponsored by both the Plan II Honors Program and the Blanton Museum of Art, for which the intern is expected to put in a 10-12 hour work week. The student must be registered for a minimum of six hours of coursework in order to recieve the stipend.

The focus of the Plan II/Blanton internship for the 12-13 year will be the 2013 Blanton Gala and 50th Anniversary; the position will be housed in the development department. The Gala Intern will have the opportunity to gain real world museum administration experience and learn more about fundraising at a non-profit organization through assisting with planning and production of events and projects.

Plan II students interning at the Blanton in past years have worked in a variety of areas including special creative projects.  Harmonious Connections, a project by Plan II student Patty Huang, features original musical compositions created by graduate students from the UT Butler School of Music for select works of art in the Blanton Museum collection. These ekphrastic pieces are written as responses to, or depictions of, thematic and visual elements in these artworks, but also stand alone as individual works of art. These compositions create a living conversation between the visual and the aural—illustrating that various artistic mediums do not exist in a vacuum, but interact with each other. Discussion of these pieces will provide insight into the inherent fluidity existing between art, music, and all other mediums of expression.

The Plan II/Blanton internship program will be on hiatus during the 2013-2014 academic year.   Check back here or read Plan II News for more information on when this opportunity will be available again.
