A detailed examination, from an engineering perspective, of the science, technology, economics and politics of non-renewable and renewable energy production and distribution. Renewable energy sources, e.g. wind, solar, plants, bacteria, will be explored as well as non-renewable energy sources, e.g. oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear. Scalingfrom personal energy needs to global energy consumptionwill provide a unifying theme.

About the Professor: Glenn Masada
Dr. Glenn Y. Masada earned his Sc.D., in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980. He joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin the same year. He is affiliated with the Dynamic Systems and Control program.
Dr. Masada researches the design, control and optimization of manufacturing and energy systems. He develops mathematical models of electric-generating power plant boilers and other thermal systems to increase their thermal efficiency, reliability and transient performance. Masada analyzes electronics manufacturing processes and designs, such as infrared solder reflow and integrated circuit packaging technologies, to increase the reliability of solder joints. He is investigating techniques to help engineers rapidly design instrumentation and control systems.
About the Professor: Tess Moon
Dr. Tess Moon earned her Ph.D. in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1989, the same year she joined the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin. She has received a number of national awards recognizing her research and teaching activities, including the National Science Foundation Young Investigator Award in 1992, the American Society of Engineering Education's Outstanding New Mechanics Educator Award in 1993, and the National Society of Professional Engineers' Engineering Education Excellence Award in 2003.
An expert in the mechanics of materials, Dr. Moon founded and directs the Integrated Mechanics of Processing and Composites Manufacturing Technologies (IMPACT) Lab. She also co-founded the Master of Science in Engineering degree with an emphasis engineering management, as well as the Executive Engineering Management Program for working technical professionals.
