Course Description

Professor Kroll's fall semester is devoted to the literary foundations, intellectual history, and evolving cultural values of the ancient, mostly Greek, world. The class will study the formal aspects of the assigned workslanguage, techniques, themes, historical, mythological, and metaphysical backgroundsas well as those special concerns that impact our own lives and thinking. And since the readings are divided among epic, tragedy, and comedy, written assignments and class discussion will focus on the elasticity of these literary traditions and their effectiveness in communicating cultural concerns.

About the Professor A classical archaeologist and historian, Professor Kroll holds a doctorate from Harvard and is a former staff member of the Sardis Excavations in Turkey and the Agora Excavations in Athens. Although he writes primarily about ancient Greek coinage, his teaching at UT is devoted to various broader aspects of Greek culture. His enthusiasms run to travel, museums, dance, the Boston Red Sox, and jazz.

Grading Policy

Your grade will be based upon four short papers (4-6 pages) and two essay examinations. The papers will count for roughly 60% of your grade, the essays for 20%; and, because class discussion is important to bring out ideas, it will count for about 20% of your grade. Since we intend to be at all scheduled classes, we expect you will be there as well.
