Glenn Richter

Professor of Music Business & Conducting

Professor Richter is in his 25th year with the University of Texas. He taught previously at the University of Michigan and the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. For fifteen years he directed the Longhorn Band program and Symphony Band. Currently, he teaches three levels of undergraduate instrumental conducting, band arranging, band literature, and music business courses. In 2002 he designed a computer instructional module for undergraduate conductors that will be available in a CD-ROM format this fall. Professor Richter also teaches seminars in Plan II and serves on the Plan II Faculty Advisory Committee. He has won recognition from the Texas Exes, been selected as a distinguished alumnus by the Tejas Foundation, and was recognized for undergraduate teaching excellence in
2000.

Class format:  Class begins at 2:00 p.m. and concludes at 2:50 p.m.  Punctuality is important to the professor and our guest speakers.  Our visiting lecturers include songwriters, performers, publishers, administrators, venue directors, entertainment lawyers, and merchandising managers.

Grades
Music performance or music reading ability is not required in order to be highly successful with this course.

Writing = 30%            Speaking/discussing/attending = 35%        Testing = 35%

Grading option:  Two or more students may collaborate on a research project.  Such a project can combine the research paper (10%) under the writing caption with the oral presentation of research  (5%) and “my venture” (5%) under the speaking caption.  Collaborations require permission in advance from the professor before October 1.

About the professor:
Professor Richter is in his 30th year with the University of Texas.  He also served on the faculties at the University of Michigan and the University of Cincinnati. Professor Richter has enjoyed performance collaborations with a wide variety of artists, including soprano Barbara Conrad, country western singer Willie Nelson,  the late Barbara Jordan, and composers Morton Gould, Gunther Schuller, and Karel Husa,.  He has recorded and produced several CDs.  As a conductor he directed public performances at Lincoln Center, the Dallas Meyerson Center, the Houston Wortham Center, and Austin's own Erwin Center.  In 1995 he received the UT Ex–Students' Association "Top Hand" award and a special leadership excellence award from the Eanes School District.  In 2000, the Tejas Foundation recognized him as a Distinguished Alumnus.  In May of 2004 he received the teaching excellence award for Fine Arts.  He is also a contributing author for a new textbook about the music business and careers in music. 

Professor Richter serves as an Associate Director and Professor for the Butler School of Music.  He is also the Director of the Center for American Music, housed in the U.T. School of Music.  During the past two years he has built the framework for Longhorn Music, the new recording label recently trademarked by U.T..  His wife, Kitt, is a UT graduate who specializes in pre-school education. Their son, Zach, is a Plan II alumnus and Yale Law graduate now an attorney with the Department of Justice in Washington D.C.. Their daughter, Kathleen, a former All Big 12 player and Academic All-American for U.T. Softball, is an Assistant Athletic director and academic counselor for U.T. Athletics.   Professor Richter enjoys ranching, organic gardening, and fishing the shallow bay waters of the Texas gulf coast.
