About the Movie:
The movie is Men With Guns, a film by John Sales. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119657/
This film is built around the Guatemalan armed conflict of the 1980s, although it is not a movie about the war per se. What it explores most clearly is the complexities and moral challenges that such struggles engender, especially to ordinary people who have no political interests at stake but who end up caught in the crossfire of the violence.
About the Professor:
Virginia Burnett is a professor of Latin American history here at UT, teaching courses on religion in Latin America and on Central American history. I just published a book entitled, Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit: Guatemala under General Efraín Ríos Montt, 1982-1983 (Oxford, 2010). By no coincidence, the subject of my book covers the very same time period as the movie.
