Book Club meeting
Tue, September 19, 2006 • Joynes Reading Room
This semester's first meeting of the Joynes Literary Society will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 19th, in Carothers 007A. Professor Carol Mackay will discuss Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own. Sign up for this event beginning Monday, Sept. 11 at the Joynes Reading Room front desk. The first fifteen students to sign up will receive a free copy of the book.Dr. Mackay says of A Room of One's Own: Sometimes called her most important work, this 1929 essay about society and art and sexism is also one of Woolf's most accessible. She takes us on an erudite yet conversational--and completely entertaining--walk around the history of women and writing, smoothly comparing the architecture of sentences by the likes of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, all the while lampooning the chauvinistic state of university education in the England of her day. Come prepared to talk about Woolf's style and ideas as well as some of the literature by other women that she brings to our attention.
