Elva Treviño Hart was born in south Texas to Mexican immigrants. She has a bachelor's degree in theoretical mathematics and a master's degree in computer science/engineering from Stanford University. After working as a computer professional for twenty years, she now lives in Virginia. She is the author of the 2000 American Book Award winning bestseller Barefoot Heart.
Her award-winning memoir, Barefoot Hart, has been widely praised for its affecting but unsentimental portrayal of childhood in a migrant family. Her latest book, Simpáticas: San Miguel Stories, is a collection of short fiction that observes the lives of wealthy American tourists through the eyes of their Mexican maids.
The Joynes Reading Room is located on the east side of the Coarthers Residence Hall at 2501 Whitis Avenue on the University of Texas at Austin Campus. Paid parking is available at the garage at 25th Street and San Antonio.
