Summer Workshop 2005
|
“This course is a must for anyone considering consulting as a career. The intensity of the experience and comprehensive approach to consulting are equally impressive. Dr Leslie Jarmon led graduate students with diverse backgrounds and little to no experience in consulting, step-by-step through the learning process with expertise. Consultants Ross Mitchel and Daniel Mueller shared invaluable insight into their consulting methods and careers that, when combined with the opportunity to consult C-level executives on contemporary and pressing issues, resulted in an unforgettable, practical, and galvanizing experience.
As an MBA student nearing graduation from the McCombs School of Business, I count this as one of the most rewarding and influential experiences of my education and the beginning of my career as a consultant; it was a pleasure to participate in such a well planned and well executed workshop. I am proud to report that I continue to consult part-time with Daniel at SOLIDexecutive, Inc.” |

STS Graduate Student Consultants Create High-Value Deliverables !!
In the summer of 2005, an interdisciplinary group of graduate students had a chance to extend their research and writing skills to a new arena: private consulting and project management. From July 25-August 5, 13 students from graduate programs in anthropology, communication studies, computer science, business, engineering, MSIS, School of Information, Education, Health, and sociology took part in the second STS summer workshop.
Spanning academic, industry, and public sector needs, the STS Summer Workshop trained graduate students in project management, consulting, and publication skills via actual projects related to social impacts of technology. Student consultants worked on specific projects with some of the private sector's most innovative thought-leaders in the Austin area who serve on the STS Advisory Board. At the same time, students contributed to the study of technology-related social change, policies, and practices, and to their own research and professional goals.
The goal of the workshop was to bring students from a range of perspectives together in a collaborative environment to receive training on project management and consulting for public and private sector clients. Students consulted for members of the STS Advisory Board.
Students worked individually or in teams on a consulting project assigned to them based on their interests and the needs of the client. During the workshop, students attended lectures by STS faculty, including STS Director Dr. Elizabeth Keating, and industry leaders, met with clients, and polished their presentation skills. The workshop culminated in an executive presentation held at the law firm of Vinson & Elkins and the delivery of final reports to the STS Advisory Board Member clients.
Dr. Leslie Jarmon, workshop organizer, felt that the projects were overwhelmingly successful: "There was 100 percent consensus by the STS Advisory Board clients that the STS projects surpassed their expectations. This was a true a triple-win experience - for the students, for the clients, and for STS."
