Spanish Screening Procedure (SSP)

For students seeking Spanish certification
The Spanish Screening Procedure (SSP) is a free, UT-developed screening tool for oral proficiency skill in Spanish for Spanish teacher certification seekers. The SSP will helps students assess and develop the required level of oral proficiency skills for the TOPT. Most students will take the TOPT exam, along with their other required teacher certification exams, in the Apprentice Teaching semester.
Taking the SSP is a great way to get a sense of your oral proficiency skills and get feedback from expert evaluators. Each semester you should strive to improve your score. On the day of the SSP you will go to the computer lab in SZB 439 and use a computer and headset with microphone to respond in Spanish to question prompts. Your responses are recorded, and a panel of expert evaluators will evaluate your responses. The whole process takes only about one-half hour and is free. The highest score you can make on the SSP is an 8.
All UTeach-LA Spanish certification seekers are required to take the SSP this semester if you are currently enrolled in UTL 101, UTL 202, UTL 303L/EDC 370S or Apprentice Teaching this semester (Fall 2009), OR you plan to take UTL 202, UTL 303L/EDC 370S or Apprentice Teaching next semester (Spring 2010). UTeach-LA Spanish certification students will NOT be eligible to enroll in the next UTeach-LA course without taking the SSP.
Students who have scored 7 or 8 on a previous SSP are NOT required to take the SSP again. If you took the SSP in a previous semester and scored 7 or 8, you are eligible to take the Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT) at any time. Contact Laura Mecanick (471-3485) in SZB 216 for information about registering for the TOPT.
