Seminar Addresses Neanderthal Control of Fire

Evidence from Pech de l’Azé IV and Roc de Marsal Recent excavations in the Mousterian cave sites of Pech de l’Azé IV and Roc de Marsal (SW France) have revealed a series of exceptionally well-preserved fire features.  While these features are interesting for what they may tell us about the use of fire at that time, it is also true that the evidence for pyrotechnology is rare at this time, both at these two sites and in the Mousterian in general.  This evidence, along with the question of what it means for the role of fire in Neandertal adaptations, will be discussed.
