The Institute of Historical Studies presents a workship titled "When Human Rights Distract us from History: Cold War Humanitarianism" by Stephen Porter, University of Cincinnati.
Mon, December 3, 2012 • 12:00 PM - 1:30 AM • GAR 4.100
Porter earned his Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Chicago. He is currently an assistant professor of history at the University of Cincinnati. His primary interests revolve around international human rights. His forthcoming book, entitled "Benevolent Empire: Refugees, NGOs, and the American State," explores how the diplomatic efforts of state and non-state institutions and the interests of both native and imperial actors interacted to shape international humanitarian projects that have been crucial to creating an image of the United States ‘as a benevolent empire.’
