The Center for East Asian Studies presents a talk, "A Letter From Afar: A Story of Repatriation and Exile" by social anthropologist Sonia Ryang.
Through an examination of a woman's letter to a friend repatriated in the late 1970s, Ryang will present the complex case of Koreans in Japan who were once strongly associated with North Korea. This story will show how human lives have been and continue to be treated with disrespect not simply because of abuse or oppression but because of historical events, such as the Cold War in Asia.
